BELL MOUNTAIN

The Road to Cradle

Track.jpg (1255457 bytes)

Bell mountain is just a couple of  kilometres north of Moina on the Forth to Cradle Mountain highway.  The view on the left is from the road to the Cethana Dam and Power Station.  Access is from the bottom of the Cethana Gorge and is a short diversion when coming from Sheffield.  Moina is at the western end of the Cethana Gorge road from Sheffield.  The walk is almost an hour return - 30+  minutes up (including plenty of rests) and 10 minutes back.  The track starts from beside the highway.  The track virtually goes straight up the slope.  Possibly one of the most impressive views in the state.

The view south from the top of Bell Mountain.

A commanding 360 degree view including virtually the entire  Western Tiers, Walls of Jerusalem, Cradle Mountain, Black Bluff, Lemonthyme Valley, Mt Roland, Lake Rowallan and Bass Strait to the north.  Cradle Mountain is in the centre of the above picture with the mountains on the overland track clearly visible to the left of Cradle.  The higher resolution photos depicts summer snow on some of the peaks.

The small settlement of Moina is in near the centre of the picture.  Accommodation is available here.  Lemonthyme Lodge is just out of picture to the left.  The start of the Bridal Veil Falls walk.
