HOUNSLOW HEATH

Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair National Park

There are three locations to commence walks at Cradle Mountain - Pencil Pine (the accommodation village), Ronny Creek (adjacent to Waldheim Chalet) and Dove Lake.  Waldheim was the original accommodation area at Cradle and still has hut accommodation today.  Ronnie Creek is the 'official' start of the Overland Track.  From here the track does not have the short but demanding steep sections of Marion's Lookout and Hanson's Peak.

There is a very fine walk on the slopes behind Waldheim Chalet.  Fagus is abundant on the walk and is very pretty in the Autumn.  If you are unlucky and visit Cradle on a wet day, the forests are the walks to head for.  The fagus has a glow in the low light and the green mosses also brighten in the wet.  The even light makes for excellent photo opportunities.

A good example of the autumn colours of the fagus.
