BASTION CASCADES - STONE HUT
CIRCUIT
The
Great Western Tiers
|
After passing Smoko Road on the right the
road crosses a bridge over Mother Cummings Rivulet. Immediately across the bridge is Quarry Road off to the right. The
quarry is a few of kiometres up the road allowing for parking.
Another kilometre or more further on is the start of the Stone Hut track
with the Bastion Cascades track a hundred metres further on.
You can drive to the start of the tracks but a 4wd may be needed after
rain. The Croft track from Stone Hut to Bastion Cascades allows for a round
trip of about 5 hours.
At Stone Hut, another track heads further
on to The Dell. Detailed maps show a route across to Split
Rock and Meander Falls. However, the condition of the track is not
known by us.
About half way between Stone Hut and
Bastion Cascades is Crowden's Croft. The way up to the Croft is
not marked. It passes through a maze of square flat boulders known
as the 'Rabbit Warren'. A spectacular view from the top.
We were lucky enough to be guided into the
area on the day we visited. The track around Bastion Cascades can
be difficult to find and care need to be taken. Otherwise the
track is well defined. At Bastion Cascade there is access to a
very narrow ledge allowing an almost full view of the main cascade.
Extreme care need to be taken here.
One of the great rainforest walks. |
